about us

Landscaping By The Lake LLC was founded in 2016 by Ira Ford, based in his hometown of Mercer Island, WA. Ira studied the environment while attending Gonzaga University, including studying biodiversity in the rainforests of Costa Rica. After graduating, Ira studied fine gardening with local experts, including his greatest influence Cass Turnbull. He started the business to pursue his passion for fine pruning and good gardening, and offer ecologically-conscious landscape services to his customers.

The business soon expanded to provide more comprehensive yard service, and now employs a crew of two skilled gardeners, who work in Mercer Island and Bellevue, performing yard service, mulch application, pruning and more.

Our distinctive style is lush and green, with plants pruned to accentuate their natural forms.

Our ecologically-conscious landscaping methodology achieves much better results, for a healthy and beautiful garden.

Our specialized methodology works with nature, performing proper plant care and not spraying chemical pesticides that poison our environment.

Conventional landscaping works against nature, by shearing plants into unnatural shapes. Another unfortunate method is excessively raking leaf debris, which erodes the topsoil and weakens the roots systems of plants. You will be able to spot conventional landscape crews by the loud noise they make, sometimes running three power tools at once, to service an area as a small residential yard.

We use power tools sparingly, and primarily use state-of-the-art electric battery-powered leaf blowers, which are surprisingly powerful and have rechargeable battery packs. Thus, our services create only a fraction of the carbon footprint of conventional landscaping, so our company is the most environmentally-friendly option for yard services.

Using our services, you can rest easy knowing that your yard will be a healthy and natural space, benefiting your surrounding environment, instead of polluting it as with conventional landscaping methodology.

Ira Ford
owner, Landscape Designer

Ira studied the environment in college, and after graduating he started working as a professional gardener on Mercer Island, his home town. The business took off and he has had great success in creating beautiful outdoor spaces and restoring health and habitat to our gardens and shared green spaces. Ira prides himself on his environmentally-conscious methods, in which the natural way to do things always takes precedence over the cheap & easy way.

He graduated from Gonzaga University with a BA in Environmental Studies, is a certified Permaculture designer, a certified Master Pruner, and sits on the Board of Directors of PlantAmnesty and TreePAC.

Methodology

Our methodology centers around 'low-intensity' using precision hand tools to handcraft lush garden, each with their own unique character, that please the eye and heal the earth.

We are excited by the idea of neighborhoods rich with wildlife habitat, where people live in harmony with nature to the benefit of both.

  • We employ integrated pest management - no chemical pesticide sprays that weaken the environment

  • Our crew vehicle runs on compressed natural gas, which is clean-burning, so our vehicle does not pollute your neighborhood air

  • We recycle our organic waste locally and minimal exportation of organic waste off-site

  • Electric battery powered leaf blowers; gasoline-engine backpack blowers used only for streets & driveway when it is rainy or wet.

  • All the organic waste (aka yard debris, leaf litter, weeds, or trimmings) that we collect is immediately recycled back into our local soils, and sometimes even on the site it was produced.

Tools

We minimize the use of power tools, eliminating excessive noise and reducing air pollution from gasoline engines, disrupting otherwise quiet and tranquil neighborhoods. Instead of using power tools, we use precision hand tools including specialized rakes, brooms, hand shears, garden scissors, hula hoes and digging knives. These tools allow us to achieve more precision and a higher quality of plant care, enabling the plants to thrive and flourish.

We use professional-grade push reel mowers to mow lawns, which more effectively build thatch for a healthier lawn. We edge lawns with digging knives, so you won't have that distinctive 'weed wacker wall' for your lawn edges, as in yards maintained by conventional landscaping companies. The lawns we maintain are lush and green, once we have restored them to heath. Healthy lawns are resistant to pests, and also resistant to drought, so they stay green in the summer longer with less irrigation.

We use state-of-the-art battery powered leaf blowers, which have surprising strength and durability, and only use gasoline-engine powered backpack blowers for wet street and driveways, as necessary.

With these methods, we create only a fraction of the carbon footprint of the conventional 'mow & blow' yard service. Gasoline powered trucks, gasoline powered tools, hauling all organic waste off-site... these methods are extremely energy intensive and very wasteful. Our methodology is centered around the concept of 'low-intensity', while still maintaining efficiency to deliver the client a superior service for a highly competitive price.

Soils

We recycle organic debris (leaf litter, weeds, and trimmings) back into the environment, by processing it and applying to the soil as a mulch. Often we will 'top dress' this mulch with ornamental mulch, like compost, beauty bark or wood chip mulch.

Recycling organic waste into the soil boosts organic matter content, which increases water retention capacity of the soil and reinvigorates the soil food web by creating a bloom of micro-organisms and invertebrates that cycle nutrients back to plants through mycorrhizal networks underground. Healthy soil allows plants to thrive, and vigorous plants grow faster, and sequester more carbon in vegetation, and produce more oxygen. More green growth means cleaner air and purified water!

In building soil and growing more vegetation, we sequester carbon dioxide from the air into the soil and plant tissue, helping to reduce the destructive effects of global climate change.
